Passing of Lowell Slaven - January 4, 2016
The Judo community mourns the loss of a friend and prominent ambassador of Judo. Lowell Franklin Slaven passed away at Community Hospital Anderson on Monday, January 4, 2016.
Lowell was born in New River, Tennessee on April 24, 1940 to the late Nora (Hamby) and Charles Slaven. After graduation from Wartburg Central High School he joined the U.S. Marine Corp where he proudly served from 1958 to 1962 and was a Commissioned Officer of the Indiana Reserve National Guard until 1971.
Lowell was a member of Full Gospel Temple in Muncie, Indiana and one of his greatest joys was sharing the Word of God. He retired from Chevrolet Muncie Transmission Plant in 1990 and was a member of the Avondale Sympathy Club.
Lowell was an 8th Degree Black Belt in both Judo and Jujitsu with over 50 years of training and experience as a competitor, instructor, coach and referee. He was the owner and head instructor of Yorktown Martial Arts and American Martial Arts from 1978 to 2005. He trained athletes, coaches and referees in camps, seminars and clinics throughout the Midwest. Lowell enjoyed the friendships he developed over the years in the Martial Arts and was always willing to share his knowledge with everyone he met.
Lowell is survived by his wife, Sandra of Muncie, Indiana; daughter, Pyrrah Slaven of Knoxville, Tennessee; brother, Jack Slaven and sister, Jone Slaven of Harriman, Tennessee and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bob, James and Roger Slaven and sister Reba.
Private arrangements are being handled by Rozelle Johnson of Anderson, Indiana. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Full Gospel Temple, 212 W. 7th Street, Muncie, Indiana at 11:00 AM.
Sensei Lowell Slaven will be deepley missed.
